What You Should Know About How Colors Impact Your Home

Jul 19, 2022

Colors are inherently central to interior design. The colors you choose – both for the interior and exterior of your home – are going to make a significant difference. If you’re trying to understand better how the colors you choose will impact your home, check out some of these tips.

Set the Mood

The most important part of a given aesthetic is the feeling it invokes. You have complete control over how a room feels when you pick a color. Neutral colors, like white, are the standard; not necessarily setting a specific mood but keeping a status quo of order and clarity. Lighter pastels, like yellow, pink, and lavender, can set a mood of whimsy or happiness. A mahogany brown can invoke a natural aesthetic, a healing rustic kind of atmosphere, whereas black can feel dark and entrapping. Generally, harsher colors will invoke a stronger, more uncomfortable reaction, and softer colors will be more livable.

Make a Space Bigger or Smaller

Another way that a room’s color changes the aesthetic of a house is how that color interacts with light to create a sensation of space. Have you ever rearranged your furniture and felt like the room suddenly had more space? It’s a bit like that. Colors and light can trick our brain into feeling like there’s more room than there is. Light colors can make a small room look bigger – white most especially. This is part of the reason that white and off-white tones are probably the common pick for indoor color. On the other hand, dark colors – black most especially – can make a space feel tight and entrapping. That’s not to say that black is an inherently terrible indoor color, but you do need to be cautious when using it. If you’re going to use black, you’re committing to a strong aesthetic!

Overall Aesthetic

An ideal home should have a consistent look, vibe, or aesthetic. Color is an indispensable tool in the creation of that. What is it that you want? Do you want to make the neo-environmentalist modern home of your dreams? Or emulate an old gothic home? Do you want modernity and minimalism? The choice is yours. Look up examples of color palettes and aesthetics that you could try and emulate with your colors and your own home.

Redoing the interiors and exteriors of your home should be fun! Your home, after all, is the ultimate customization project. If you plan well and make tasteful choices, there’s no doubt that your colors can transform your space into something extraordinary.
