What to Be Aware of With Trees in Your Backyard

Multifuse Team • May 24, 2022

There is nothing quite so wonderful and majestic as having plenty of trees in your backyard. A large backyard space full of trees, plants, bushes, flowers, and grass provides you with a small nature oasis right out your backdoor. But having an expansive backyard with plenty of trees is also a major responsibility, one that you have to take on if you want to keep your backyard in good condition for years to come. Here are the top three things to be aware of with trees in your backyard to keep them looking good and your backyard safe.

Overgrowth

The first thing that you have to be aware of with trees in your backyard is the potential for overgrowth. When you think about landscaping and yard maintenance, your first thoughts are probably mowing, hedging, and trimming your bushes. But your trees are just as susceptible to overgrowth as your other greenery. Make sure that you are looking out for overgrowth in your trees, particularly looking for branches approaching your neighbors land, your home, or hovering over sensitive areas like fencing or electrical wires. Make sure that you are trimming or having your trees trimmed yearly or semi-annually to keep overgrowth at bay.

Pests

Trees offer an entire ecosystem for pests to move into. There are all sorts of unwanted pests that may try to make the trees in your backyard their new home. The worst part is that these pests can then get into your home, causing damage and frightening you. You should be particularly wary of squirrels living in your trees. Squirrels can enter your home through openings in your roof or chimney. They can then find their way into the walls of your home and your foundation, causing problems.

Dangerous Branches

The final thing that you should remain aware of is dangerous branches overhanging your home. This is not necessarily the same as overgrowth, as perfectly healthy branches of your tree can pose a threat to your home. Branches that are close to your walls or roof have the potential to fall during storms and cause serious damage to your home. It is best to keep your trees away from your house by a few feet if possible and remember to trim any branches that get too close.

Having trees in your backyard can create a magnificent landscape for your home. But they also pose some risks that you have to remain aware of. If you are aware of these three risks of trees in your backyard, then you can keep your trees healthy and your home safe.
