How to Design Your Home for More Socializing

Multifuse Team • May 06, 2021

Your home has the capability to be the center of your social life. With a few modifications, you can make your home to be a place where your friends and family want to gather. Soon, you will be looking for excuses to stay in!

Add a Front Porch

In this day and age, it seems like everyone is walking around the neighborhood. The best way for you to interact with those around you is by sitting out on your front porch . By adding a front porch, it opens your home to conversations with the delivery courier, people walking their dogs, and neighbors coming home from work. A front porch is a great way to give the front of your home more dimension as well. Typically, a front porch is covered, allowing you to entertain in all sorts of weather conditions.

Build a Deck

If your backyard is uneven and you want to be able to enjoy the surroundings with others, a deck is a perfect option . Decks are also raised above the ground, making it easier to maintain and allows you to save time for entertaining. You can even use the space underneath the deck for storage, or for another patio. Using the railings of your deck, you can create ambiance with string lights draped around them. In cases where your backyard is near the woods, a deck immerses you and your guests in nature.

Create a Backyard Patio

Instead of building a deck, if your backyard is fairly level, a patio is a great way to bring the party outside. Patios are more beneficial for socializing instead of just being in the grass because it provides a hard surface, perfect for grills and outdoor furniture. Also, if it rained recently, you do not have to worry about mud ruining your party. In terms of what you should make your patio out of, there are a couple of options. Concrete is more affordable than hardscaping your backyard patio. They also require less upkeep because you do not have to worry about replacing paving stones or refilling gaps.

Install a Pool

Being outside during summer in a hotter climate is often unfavorable and uncomfortable. So, if you wanted to keep socializing outdoors, installing a pool is a great way to escape the heat with your friends. As opposed to going to a community pool, your friends and family can spend time together without sharing the space with others or dealing with regulatory measures that public pools have. It is also a great way to exercise together when in the water. A pool is paired well with a deck or a patio, allowing you to stay outside all day long.

Get a Fire Pit

For year-round outdoor entertainment , a firepit is a great addition to your home. In the winter, a fire pit can be used to keep warm, while it can be a gathering spot in the summer to roast marshmallows and feel like you are camping. You can either build a permanent fire pit or get a transportable one that you can put wherever you want in your yard. You also have the option between a gas powered fire pit or a natural wood fire. Gas lit fire pits are easier for the whole family to use and are better for the environment. However, wood burning fire pits are cheaper if you have access to firewood. Firepits provide warmth, light, and a way to provide food. Depending on where you live, however, you might not be able to have an open fire if you experience droughts often.

Open Your Kitchen

Inside your kitchen is a perfect location for socializing if you have an open concept design . The general idea of an open kitchen is that the dining room is connected to the kitchen, making it more casual and relaxed. This allows you to be preparing food in the kitchen, while being surrounded by your guests. With an open concept design, mealtime becomes more of a family affair instead of just one person working alone. Eating should be a social experience, and that is achieved easily when your kitchen has space for everyone to congregate.

Make a Home Theater

Creating a home theater turns movie nights and watch parties into an experience and is much more than just sitting in a room that happens to have a television in it. Comfortable, forward facing seating is perfect for all your friends to watch a marathon with you. For a more realistic experience, you can also install dimming lights and a surround sound system. If you go with a simpler set up, you might be able to do it yourself. But if you want the full movie theater feel, you can hire a contractor to do it for you. Your home will become the go to spot for sports games, award shows, and movie premiers alike.

Design a Game Room

For those who have kids that always have friends over, a game room creates a fun space for them to hang out. Like a home theater, this can be designated as a place with a television to play video games. A game room can also include board games, foosball, or a pool table. If you have young children and would rather have a place for their toys, you can have a playroom that transitions into a game room as they grow up. When you are entertaining many people, it is helpful to compartmentalize your home and activities. A game room provides a place for the younger crowd to have fun, while the adults are in another room. You can also fill the game room with snacks and drinks to help your children be self sufficient when they are entertaining their own guests.

Whatever you chose to turn your space into, you want it to be a place where people naturally flock to because they feel comfortable there. Once you upgrade your home with socializing in mind, your friends and family will be lining up to spend time in your house.
