North Liberty, IA Area Guide

General Information and History

Settled in 1838, the city of North Liberty sits just north of Coralville and Iowa City and south of Cedar Rapids. Located in the heart of Johnson County, this thriving community has a population of over 10,000 residents.

When John Gaylor and Alonzo C. Dennison first settled the area, it was known as “Big Bottom” or “North Bend” and later known as “Squash Bend” before the city was platted with its fourth and final name of North Bend in 1857. Incorporated in 1913, North Bend had a population of 190, but by the 1960’s its population had expanded and become big enough for the Iowa City Community School District to open Penn Elementary School in 1961. By 1980, the population had grown to over 2,000 and in response to the growth, the North Liberty Community Library was founded as well as Penn Meadows Park. By 2000, residency was over 5,000 and the city had inaugurated its own police and fire departments and built a community center with a library and aquatic park. That year also saw the opening of a City Administration building and the city has continued to grow.

With new things to do and a great sense of civic pride, the residents of North Liberty welcome you and would love to show you around the city that they’ve nurtured to its current size, where they’ll show you North Liberty is big enough to have lots of things to do, but small enough to enjoy them and their neighbors!
